Don Shelby Environmental Journalist to Headline Spring Fling

By Carol Jackson

One of the country’s most decorated and honored local television journalists Don Shelby will be the featured speaker at the Ney Nature Center’s 5th annual Spring Fling benefit dinner and silent auction. Shelby recently retired as anchorman, investigative reporter and environmental correspondent for WCCO-TV in the Twin Cities.

After retiring in November 2010 following a 45-year career, Shelby has found new outlets in his passion for journalism. He continues to write for MinnPost, daily on-line, and is often read in Salon and dozens of other internet news aggregators. He now specializes in environment and science reporting, and lends his time to the Climate Science Rapid Response Team roundtable.

The recipient of several honors, in 2010 he was named Distinguished Minnesotan, an honor he shares with such luminaries as Sigurd Olson and Will Steger. He has reported from locations spanning the globe and has served as a war correspondent, most recently from Iraq, embedded with the 34th “Red Bull” Infantry Division of the Minnesota National Guard.

He also served a 10-year stint as drive-time radio personality for WCCO-AM 8-3-0 and began a weekly segment known as E-Day in which he dedicated three hours every week to the discussion of environmental issues, paving the way for Minnesota to become one of the leading states in energy conservation and policy.

An author, actor, avid outdoorsman and a primitive survival specialist, in his free time you will find Don somewhere in his beloved BWCA hiking or canoeing, or on a mountain sharing nature and its peace with members of his family. He and his wife Barbara have three grown daughters and three grandchildren, and are in the process of building a new high energy home in the Twin Cities area.

Please mark your calendar for this year’s Spring Fling on Saturday, April 28th at The American Legion Post 79 in Montgomery. Join us for an exciting evening of dining, entertainment and fun. Chef Darlene has planned a special menu and the committee is assembling lots of unique donations for the silent auction and raffle. We will also be presenting the Volunteer of the Year Award and Friend of the Ney Nature Center Award. A flyer with details and a registration form will be available soon on the web site www.neycenter.org as well as mailed to all members. Contact Becky for additional information – info@neycenter.org or phone at 507-248-3474.
