Geocaching Course

NEW for 2025! Ney has set up a geocaching course through the Arli-Dazzle event! Explore Main Street and surrounding areas by searching for hidden caches. Want to join the fun? Check out the information below on how to participate.

How to Participate

  1. Visit the Ney Geocaching table at Arli-Dazzle between 1:00pm and 4:00pm to check-in
  2. Receive directions & materials on the 10-cache course
  3. Use your phone to find the hidden caches in any order and sign the log of each
  4. Return to the Ney Geocaching table before 5:00pm for check-out

Rules

  • Check-in at the Ney table before you start AND after you finish in order to qualify for prizes
  • When you find a cache, sign the log and return it exactly as it was found for other participants
  • Participant with fastest time AND most caches found wins – winner is contacted following the event
  • Use the SAME name to sign the log of each cache you find
  • Stay on public property at all times
  • Do not start your search prior to 1:00pm on December 6th or before checking in at the Ney table. But if you can’t wait to get started, follow the directions on the “using your phone” section below to download and review the reccomended app prior to participating to get ready to go!

Tips & Tricks

  • The 10 caches can be found in ANY order
  • 5 of the caches are on or near Main Street, the other 5 are within walking distance
  • Each cache that you find and sign the log = 1 point (10 points total possible)
  • Finding the BONUS cache earns an additional 2 points (for total of 12) – you must be able to share the COLOR of the cache at check-out to earn this bonus. (Signing the log is optional)

Using Your Phone

To participate, you’ll need a smartphone with a geocaching app or a GPS unit. We recommend the official Geocaching app by Groundspeak (details below).

How to Use the Geocaching App by Groundspeak:

  1. Download the official Geocaching app by Groundspeak and sign up for a free account — no upgrades needed.
  2. Open the map view and tap any nearby geocache (green circle with a white box).
  3. Scroll down and tap Waypoints.
  4. Tap the plus (+) sign under “My Waypoints.”
  5. Enter the coordinates and tap Add.
  6. Tap your new waypoint, double-check the coordinates, then tap the navigation triangle to begin your search.

Keep in Mind

  • If you’re new to geocaching, check out Geocaching.com for an overview.
  • Once your GPS/app shows you’re within 25 feet of your target, start your search.
  • All caches are on public property and readily visible – no need to dig, climb, etc
  • Once you click the navigation triangle, if it is showing driving directions, click the person icon in the top-right-hand corner to switch to walking directions.
  • You can either use the Geocaching app’s map to see the basket location from above, or you can click the compass icon in the right-hand corner of the map screen to see distance to the basket and direction to walk only.
