Orienteering

When we think of navigation today most people think of using GPS on our phones and cars, but this method of navigating can sometimes be unreliable. Phones can lose battery and service rendering them useless in an emergency. Alternatively, a simple map and compass, and knowledge of how to use them will always be reliable.

While these skills can take time to learn, activities such as orienteering can help to develop them and have fun while doing so. Originally used for military training in Sweden in the late 19th century, orienteering quickly became a competitive sport. In this sport, individuals or teams use a map and compass to find locations marked by a post or flag (called a control point) as fast as possible. Courses can range in size based on the number and distance between control points, as well as difficulty of terrain.

We have some exciting news to share here at Ney Nature Center. We are in the process of updating all of the signage for our three orienteering courses. This includes replacing old signs and confirming the accurate locations of all of our control points. Currently , our beginner course is completely updated with the medium and large courses following soon

If you are looking to try orienteering at Ney, all you will need is a compass, a map and your phone. Our courses use the iOrienteering app which will help to track the time it takes to complete the course. The maps for each of  our courses are available on our website. Once you are at Ney with your compass and map, simply select the course you are doing on the iOrienteering app and scan the start code located on the sign post in the parking lot. If you need help finding the start, the orienteering app will show you the starting location and staff at ney are also happy to help.

Ney also offers a variety of programs to help teach orienteering and compass skills. You can keep an eye out on our calendar for events or schedule your own group. Whether you are orienteering with us or just enjoying the course yourself, it can be a great way to enjoy time outside and discover more of the park! Our course was made possible by students from the New Prague Alternative School and the Minnesota Orienteering Club.
